SP - 1 EP - 19 VL - 21 IS - 1 N2 - Phosphorus-containing amino acid-type herbicides (PAAHs) have been being extensively employed around the world since the 1980's. In Japan, along with the increase in the use of such herbicides, cases of poisoning due to their ingestion tend to increase. Poisoning due to the intake of a PAAH, especially glufosinate, is characterized by a latent period without notable symptoms which lasts 4 to 60 h, followed by a sudden outburst of severe central nervous system symptoms, such as respiratory depression and convulsions. Therefore, the identification and determination of glufosinate in blood at an early stage of poisoning are very valuable for the effective treatment. The present review deals with toxicity, toxicokinetics, mechanism of action and the methods of analysis of glufosinate. In addition, actual clinical cases of glufosinate and glyphosate poisoning, which we experienced, were also presented.
