SP - 40 EP - 43 VL - 23 IS - 1 N2 - Suicidal death is emerging as major social problem worldwide. The choice of method used to commit suicide depends upon the availability of means, knowledge about lethal effectiveness and the victim's motivation and intent. The different modes of suicides in India are poisoning, hanging, drowning, burning and firearms, etc. But suicide by firearm is not a very common method in our country. A retrospective study on suicide by security personnel was carried out in the Dept. of Forensic Medicine, RIMS, Imphal during the period of 1996 to 2005 to find out the incidence of suicide, age distribution, motivating factors, means of suicide, etc. amongst the security personnel. The data thus obtained was analysed and presented in this paper.
