TY - JOUR PY - 2006// TI - The determinants of self-rated mental health among older adults in singapore JO - Hallym International Journal of Aging A1 - Chan, A. A1 - Pin, N.T. A1 - Niti, M. SP - 65 EP - 81 VL - 8 IS - 1 N2 - The aim of this article is to identify the determinants of poor self-rated mental health among the older Singapore population. In 1995, older Chinese Singaporean males had one of the highest suicide rates in Asia; 52 per 100,000 (Kua, Ko, & Ng, 2003). This rate has since declined to 17.8 per 100,000 in 2000 which is still higher than the national average of 12.5 per 100,000 for men and 6.4 per 100,000 for women. In his classic study, Suicide, Durkheim (1951) concluded that suicide was the ultimate expression of anomie. © 2007, Institute of Aging Studies.
