N2 - The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division is seeking budget support for an affordable, man-portable guided missile design 'Spike'. The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division has devised a portable guided missile prototype called Spike which has capability of creating an inexpensive, fire-and-forget guided missile weighing less than 10 kilogram. Spike is designed for specially urban warfare and counter-terrorist operations and cost of each missile would be about $5000, much cheaper than the Raytheon/Lockheed Martin Javelin Weapon System (a compact, lightweight anti-tank guided missile system). The lab is also trying to obtain funding from the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization which require technology to counter roadside bombs, suicide bombs, and other insurgent weapons. It is also planning to advertise the weapon's utility in thwarting roadside bomb attacks such as the the 2000 USS Cole incident to tap funds for project.
