N2  - When Western mass media deal with wife beatings, suicide bombings, and other forms of violence that occur in Islamic communities, liberal and progressive intellectuals react by saying that such actions do not represent mainstream Islam which is peaceful, tolerant, etc. While avoiding judgment of any particular religion as violent or peaceful, as compatible or incompatible with democracy and modernity, I propose to consider how religion turns into ideology.
