N2  - Suicide and parasuicide have become major public health issues. Because many African countries are low- or middle-income countries, it is suggested that, although the suicide rate may be relatively lower than in Western industrialized societies, the current reported data may be underestimates. In addition, there is a tendency to study this phenomenon in comparison with male suicide, in spite of significant biological, psychological, economic, and social differences. This paper is an attempt to review female suicide in Africa. It is concluded by an exploration of some reactions to suicide in the Midwestern part of Nigeria. © 2010 Cises.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>
