N2  - For more than twenty years hair dye poisoning by intentional paraphenylene-diamine (PPD) ingestion has been a common and potentially severe way of suicide in Northern Africa, the Indian subcontinent and Saudi Arabia. We report the case of a 37-year-old Moroccan woman who committed suicide by deliberate ingestion of PPD. Systemic toxicity of PPD is characterized by acute respiratory distress secondary to laryngeal edema, rhabdomyolysis with myoglobinuria and a chocolate brown colored urine as well as acute renal failure. Myocardial injury may be a fatal complication. No specific antidote exists against PPD, the treatment remaining supportive. Mortality rate is high.<p /> <p>Language: nl</p>
