SP - 53 EP - 58 VL - 39 IS - 1 N2 - The study analyzed the characteristics of people hospitalized at Vrapče Psychiatric Hospital for attempted suicide. The analyses considered all relevant data from the years 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2008. The main aim of the study was to assess differences in the frequency of suicidal attempts according to the main discharge diagnosis, sex, age and way of attempting suicide. The study was carried out by analyzing documentation of patients admitted under the diagnosis of attempted suicide. The following data were collected from patient documentation: main discharge diagnosis, sex, age and way of attempting suicide. A total of 175 subjects were analyzed in 2002 and 2003, and 243 subjects in 2007 and 2008. Study results showed attempted suicide as the first (main) diagnosis at both patient admission and discharge to be recorded in 26.6% of study subjects; the next main discharge diagnoses included depression in 17.7%, neurotic, stress related and somatoform disorders in 15.2%, organic and symptomatic mental disorders in 12.3%, psychoactive substance abuse in 11.1%, personality disorders and adult behavior disorders in 8.2%, and schizophrenia in 7% of subjects. The study revealed suicide attempts by intentional self-poisoning to be equally common among male and female subjects aged 39-59. Additional studies are needed to identify the risk factors for suicidal behavior and to seek for the best possible suicide prevention programs.
