TY - JOUR PY - 2014// TI - Psychiatric disorders and economic crises JO - Journal fur Neurologie, Neurochirurgie und Psychiatrie A1 - Berghofer, G. A1 - Psota, G. SP - 147 EP - 151 VL - 15 IS - 3 N2 - A close association exists between economic crises and increased rates of unemployment, psychiatric disorders (eg, depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, and alcoholism), and suicide. At the same time, effective measures to counteract harmful health outcomes of economic crises exist. These measures include social and financial welfare services, labour market programmes, family support programmes, and debt relief programmes. By contrast, reductions of public health budgets in economic crises lead to a deterioration of health care services and to increased health costs in the long run. Thus, in order to effectively counteract the negative health outcomes of economic crises, preventive strategies should include the expansion of psychosocial offerings and of medical and therapeutic health care services with low access thresholds. © 2014, Krause und Pachernegg GmbH.
