TY - JOUR PY - 2014// TI - The right to assisted suicide in the case law of the european court of human rights JO - The international journal of human rights A1 - Puppinck, G. A1 - de La Hougue, C. SP - 735 EP - 755 VL - 18 IS - 7-8 N2 - Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights requires that the state not only abstains from inflicting death, but also protects life. Nonetheless, the case law of the European Court of Human Rights seems to be progressively outlining a right to assisted suicide, which would fall in the scope of the right to private life. In this order, the court modifies the ground of dignity: it is no more inherent to human nature, but linked to each individual's perception of dignity. Finally, this case law raises questions relating to the role of the court. © 2014 Taylor & Francis.
