TY - JOUR PY - 2007// TI - The Coast Guard's Data Warehouse: Using Maritime Safety Data to Support Risk Management JO - Proceedings of the Marine Safety and Security Council A1 - Dickey, DH SP - 22 EP - 24 VL - 64 IS - 1 N2 - In 2001, the U.S. Coast Guard deployed a new information system known as the Marine Information for Safety and Law Enforcement (MISLE) system, which replaced the aging Marine Safety Information System (MSIS), developed in the early 1980s. MISLE was designed to collect a variety of information on the vessels and facilities that operate on U.S. waterways. Among its many capabilities, MISLE records details of boardings, inspections, response operations, and casualty investigations. This article provides an overview of MISLE content and also discusses new tools recently included to analyze this valuable information in the form of a data warehouse that became available shortly after MISLE was activated. This new data warehouse, termed Coast Guard Business Intelligence (CGBI), was designed to help managers throughout the agency assess mission performance and strategies for risk management.
