TY - JOUR PY - 2007// TI - Method for Running Safety Assessment of Railway Vehicles Against Structural Vibration Displacement During Earthquakes JO - Quarterly report of the railway technical research institute of Japan A1 - Luo, Xianghua A1 - Miyamoto, T. SP - 129 EP - 135 VL - 48 IS - 3 N2 - In this paper, the authors discuss the behavior of railroad cars and vehicles that are subjected to seismic motion. A Running Safety Assessment (RSA) is conducted based on the Peak Velocity (PV) index and the Spectral Intensity (SI) index. The SI is an energy-related frequency-domain index reflecting the output intensity of the vehicle?s response. The PV index, on the other hand, is a time-domain index reflecting the intensity, or peak velocity, acting on the vehicle. The characteristics of the SI and PV assessment indices corresponding to a range of seismic motions are then compared. The results indicate that the SI index is more appropriate than the PV index in terms of accuracy and stability of assessment. A nomogram or graph for RSA corresponding to different ground classifications and denoting danger areas is also presented.
