TY - JOUR PY - 2021// TI - Beyond the Gender Cage - Gender Aware Treatment in Male Substance Addiction JO - Suchttherapie A1 - Vosshagen, A. SP - 65 EP - 71 VL - 22 IS - 2 N2 - Men dominate in the consumption and addiction to alcohol and illegal drugs. A connection to the life situation of men and their way of constructing their masculinity is rarely drawn in addiction therapy, research and training. The male gender role today provides greater pluralism. However, it remains fundamentally based on traditional elements of strength and vulnerability. A discourse among men about the dangers and development opportunities of male behavior has not really started. Instead, a global regression towards rigid images of women and men. However, men still die earlier than women, more frequently from suicide and are, for example, more likely to be incarcerated. This article focuses on the close relationship between men and substance addiction and appeals for gender-sensitive consideration of male gender role aspects in addiction therapy. As examples of a possible procedure, reference is made to a manual on the subject and a recently published video series. © 2021. Thieme. All rights reserved.
