N2  - This article is a thematic review of relevant research conducted in the field of mental health in the medical profession. An analysis of mental disorders and addictions occurring in the work of physicians, which are dictated by excessive intensity and dynamic workload in the medical profession, inducing a high level of occupational stress, as well as shift work, irregular working hours, time stress and environment with increased professional tension. Emphasis is placed on depressive disorders, burnout syndrome, suicide and alcohol and other addictions characterizing the medical profession. These current facts concerning the mental health of physicians and the parallel need to introduce the values of civil society in the language of psychiatric practice and theory is a priority of health policy. The promotion of mental health of physicians is most effective when it acts at critical moments in the life of the individual and the community as demonstrated by this review, actively contributing to the optimization of the level of public health. This will reduce severe morbidity and disability from mental disorders, premature mortality among people with mental illness, and years lived with disability. © 2021, Central Medical Library Medical University â€" Sofia.
