TY - JOUR PY - 2003// TI - Effect of Severe Fire on Performance of Steel Columns JO - Journal of applied fire science A1 - Ali, Fahad A1 - Mcmdonagh, J A1 - Nadjai, Ali A1 - Talamona, D. SP - 55 EP - 64 VL - 12 IS - 1 N2 - The majority of previous studies on performance of steel structures under fire are based on the standard fire curve BS476 or lower. However, in reality fire can be more severe and with higher heating rates. This article represents the outcome of a research on the behavior of steel columns under severe fire (higher than BS476). The study was performed at the Fire Research Institute, University of Ulster. The research involved six steel columns tested under three loading levels - 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6. The results of the research are shown in the article including measurements of axial displacement and temperatures. The article provides a useful comparison between the experimental values of the fire resistance of the columns and the theoretical values calculated according to BS5959, Part 8, and ends with valuable conclusions.
