N2  - Borderline personality disorder (BDP) is a complex mental disorder associated with severe functional impairment, and a high rate mortality by suicide. For BDP, key psychobiological domains include impulsive aggression, associated with reduced serotonergic activity in the brain, and affective instability, associated with increases responsivity of cholinergic systems. There are strong genetic influences on traits that underlie BDP, such as neuroticism, impulsivity anxiouness affective lability, and insecure attachment. Predictors of poor prognosis include history of childhood sexual abuse, early age at first psychiatric contact, chronicity of symptoms, affective instability, aggression, substance abuse, and increased comorbidity. BDP and bipolar disorder co-occur, but their relationship is not consistent or specific.
