Mean total HRSD score was found to be 30.3 [ +/- 5.62]. The most frequent symptoms reported were depressed mood, limitation of work and activities, anxiety-psychic, and somatic symptoms-GIT. The opinion of Egyptian psychiatrists was sought as to the appropriateness of HRSD items as applied to Egyptian major depressive patients. Items considered to need modification included genital symptoms, agitation, insight, somatic symptoms-GIT, helplessness, depersonalization and derealisation
