SP - 244 EP - 248 VL - 29 IS - 5 N2 - Chloroquine poisoning is an acute life-threatening event. Treatment and monitoring at an intensive care unit are essential. We report on two patients, who attempted to commit suicide by ingesting 12.5 g of chloroquine. After gastric lavage, treatment with 1 mg per kg bodyweight of diazepam, initially for the first 30 min, followed by 10 mg per hour is recommended. Hemoperfusion using a Hemoresin® capsule (Fa. Braun, Melsungen, FRG) proved to be effective in removing chloroquine from blood. Cardiac arrythmias caused by chloroquine are treated with intravenous sodium chloride infusions, cardiac low output syndrome by epinephrine.
