N2  - It is paradoxical that antidepressants which are prescribed for the treatment of depression can be responsible for suicide, which is usually attempted by depressed patients. While ever since antidepressants were introduced, a tendency to suicide at an early stage of treatment has been observed, usually due to suppression of inhibition, extended studies show that the risk persists even in the long term. It is even slightly higher when antidepressants are used, as compared with placebo, when double blind tests are conducted. Nevertheless, 'naturalistic' studies show that the incidence of suicide or attempted suicide is higher in untreated patients, vs. those who have been treated with antidepressants or by ECT.<p /> <p>Language: fr</p>
