N2  - 323 alcoholics have been followed for 5 years, in order to observe the influence of previous suicidal attempts in their clinical evolution. Against what we expected, patients who had attempted suicide (TA+) have better drinking outcomes than the rest (TA-), and similar psychosocial stress. 8 of the patients in the Ta+ group, mainly males, show a higher risk of new suicidal attempts, worse prognosis, higher levels of psychopathology and increased probability of dropping out from treatment. Treatment seems to be the key. In fact, the better prognosis that in broad terms we have found in the TA+ group is clearly related to the length of treatment, both psychological and pharmacological (antidepressants and neuroleptics) during the first year of treatment. Those data suggest that paying more attention to psychiatric and psychological aspects of alcoholism might help patients to think treatment is useful, which should promote lower attrition rates.<p /> <p>Language: es</p>
