TY - JOUR PY - 1996// TI - Épilepsie et dé́cès en milieu institutionnel JO - Epilepsies A1 - Tourniaire, D. A1 - Remy, C. A1 - Favel, P. SP - 325 EP - 328 VL - 8 IS - 4 N2 - We have retrospectively reviewed 108 cases of death among institutionnalized patients followed in the "Établissement Médical de la Teppe ". Death occurred between 1955 and 1995. CNS-related or psychiatric causes were prominent, responsible together for 55% of all deaths. The most frequent causes of death in institutionalized epilepsy patients were sudden unexplained death, suicide, cranial traumatism, pneumopathies, and drowning, which accounted respectively for 21, 17, 14, 11 and 8 cases. Mean age of death was 37.4 years. Gender, age, type of epilepsy, etiology, age of onset, type and frequencey of seizures, antiepileptic drugs, or associated treatment did not seem to play a specific role. These datas confirm reduction of life expectancy in patients with epilepsy, but the population studied here includes a high proportion of severe cases.
