N2  - The correlation between the suicide rate and certain social characteristics of population have been studied by various authors. Thirty cases of suicide were recorded from 1980 to 1989 in a rural area of Ireland. In a neighbouring area where no suicide was recorded during the same period, a comparative study of twenty patients who attempted suicide was carried out sociodemographically and for length of stay in hospital. There was no significant difference between attempters and completed suicide in most sociodemographic variables. Significantly attempters have more family history of mental illness and suicide. The length of stay in hospital and suicide was positively correlated.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>
