TY - JOUR PY - 1987// TI - The psychopharmacology of borderline personality disorders JO - Acta psychiatrica Belgica A1 - Montgomery, Stuart A. SP - 260 EP - 266 VL - 87 IS - 3 N2 - Discusses research suggesting an association between disturbance of serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine and suicidal behavior in depression. A similar relationship observed in studies of borderline personality disorders suggests that this association is not specific to depression. The neuroleptic flupenthixol has been shown to significantly reduce subsequent suicidal behavior in patients with personality disorders without depression or schizophrenia. Evidence points to a biological basis for suicidal behavior and borderline personality disorder (BPD). It is suggested that investigation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) metabolites in patients that have responded to treatment for suicidal behavior might lead to effective treatment for aspects of BPD.
