N2  - Discusses the impact of different forms of child maltreatment on children's normal and abnormal development in relation to the family context. The authors draw upon the theoretical structure of developmental psychopathology and mechanisms related to the formation of stress-related adjustment disorders in children to underscore the importance of the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral impact of family violence and abuse. <br><br>FINDINGS related to physically abused children, children of battered women, and sexually abused children are reviewed. It is concluded that behavioral problems often seen among these populations should be recognized as part of a pattern of behavior that emanates from children's attempts to adapt to inappropriate and extreme situational circumstances in their families.
