N2  - The idea of Tacitus and Dio that suicide before conviction obviated confiscation is proved erroneous by specific cases in Tacitus' narrative and by a passage of Ulpian. The sale of slaves in connection with their giving testimony against their master, which Tacitus and Dio represent as circumvention of the law by Tiberius, it appears from the jurists was provided by law; and sale followed examination instead of preceding.
