N2  - A study was made of the safety effects of two Georgia laws: a 65 mph speed limit which became effective February 19, 1988, and a mandatory seat belt law which became effective September 1, 1988. Odds ratios were used to compare differences between the numbers of fatal accidents, fatalities, and injuries that occurred during before and after periods for each functional class of highway. The significance of the ratios was measured by the Mantel-Haenszel Chi-square statistic and its P-value. Time series analyses were also performed using data back to 1983. This research revealed both a deleterious effect of the 65 mph limit and some benefits of the seat belt law.<p />
