N2  - The National Child Restraint Use Survey was conducted in October/November, 1985, at 130 sites across Canada. A total of 12,166 children were observed in private automobiles stopped at red lights, to determine the type of restraint system used (i.e. infant carrier, child seat, booster seat, seat belt) and proper use (i.e. seat belt, shoulder harness, tether strap fastened). About 46% of the children observed were seated in appropriate restraint systems for their age; proper use of these restraints was 75%. The overall result was that one-third of children under 16 travel safely restrained in motor vehicles.<p />
