N2  - The level of head protection in automobile racing has progressed substantially during the past three decades. This paper reviews the development of the modern-day crash helmet with particular emphasis on the effects of increasingly stringent performance standards. Some of the current industrial research and development activities in racing head protection are reviewed and some possible implications of this work to road traffic vehicles are discussed.<p />
