TY - JOUR PY - 1979// TI - The 55 Alive/Mature Driving program JO - Proceedings: American Association for Automotive Medicine Annual Conference A1 - Seaton, M SP - 235 EP - 241 VL - 23 IS - N2 - The 55 Alive/Mature Driving program has been developed by the National Retired Teachers Association/American Association of Retired Persons (NRTA/AARP) as a community service program for motor vehicle operators age 55 and over. The program is the first comprehensive nationwide course designed to deal with the special interests and need of this age group. The six session course includes information which research has shown will help older drivers update driving knowledge, sharpen skills, and remain on the road longer. 55 Alive/Mature Driving is currently being piloted in California, Florida, Illinois and Virginia. More than 10,000 older drivers are participating in the project. The effectiveness of the course is being evaluated by the U.S. Department of Transportation. It is hoped that the program can emerge as a national model for traffic safety officials.
