TY - JOUR PY - 1974// TI - Automobile fatalities by postural asphyxia JO - Proceedings: American Association for Automotive Medicine Annual Conference A1 - Wright, R. K. A1 - Harris, L. S. SP - 104 EP - 107 VL - 18 IS - N2 - Efforts to reduce the carnage on our highways have included those directed at lessening vehicle occupant impact forces and at making the automobile a less "hostile environment". We present four cases in which impact forces were survivable, and indeed were survived, but wherein subsequent asphyxia was the mechanism of death. These death represent 4% of all motor vehicle occupant deaths during the study period of one year. The criteria for the diagnosis and the implications for the injury and death reduction effort are discussed.
