TY - JOUR PY - 1972// TI - Recent developments in roadside crash cushions JO - Proceedings: American Association for Automotive Medicine Annual Conference A1 - Viner, J. G. SP - 337 EP - 340 VL - 16 IS - N2 - Crash cushions have demonstrated the capability of significantly reducing the severity of a collision with fixed roadside obstacles. Accident experience to date with several of these impact attenuators has confirmed expectations of their probable performance. The Federal Highway Administration has urged the placement of these devices, especially in locations where they have proven useful, such as bridge gores. Further research is underway to extend the list of roadside conditions for which such barriers would be a cost effective lifesaving tool. New types of barriers are under development and efforts are being made to add to our insight on the nature of vehicle-barrier collisions.
