TY - JOUR PY - 1962// TI - Patterns of injury in fatal automobile accidents JO - Proceedings: American Association for Automotive Medicine Annual Conference A1 - Huelke, Donald F. A1 - Gikas, Paul W. A1 - Hendrix, Robert C. SP - 44 EP - 58 VL - 6 IS - N2 - The exact cause of death in individuals who have died in automobile accidents is not well documented nor are the exact causes of death in most of the cases well known Very seldom are necropsies performed to determine the extent, severity, and location of the various injuries. Although there are a few scattered reports of injuries to specific body parts--head, thorax, etc.-- these studies usually do not consider the body as a whole. As far as we have been able to determine, only one article on injuries in traffic fatalities, as determined by autopsies, has appeared in an American medical journal. This study, however, included pedestrians, auto-train, and cyclist fatalities. We feel that only by necropsies can we fully understand the type, extent, and location of injuries in automobile fatalities. Thus, as back ground information for our continuing study on the causes of death in automobile accidents, we initiated the review and summary of autopsy protocols of victims who died as a result of automobile accidents.
