Abstract

To increase our understanding of how international and civil conflicts can be resolved is of vital importance. At no time in history have the nations and peoples of the world been so interdependent. Technological advances in transportation and communication have had far-reaching effects, bringing enormous benefits, but also causing new problems. National and international institutions have had great difficulty in coping with the demands placed on them. The opportunities for disputes to arise are far more numerous, and the consequences of conflict are more dangerous than ever before.
