Abstract

A transcript is provided of a discussion held under the auspices of the Aberdeen (Scotland) Medical Group on 6 November 1985. The participants included several physicians, a lecturer in community medicine, a medical student, a police inspector, and a law professor. They discussed whether a physician should violate confidentiality to inform the police about alcohol use by a patient treated for injuries sustained in a traffic accident. With the police inspector disagreeing, the participants arrived at a general consensus that the physician's primary obligation is to respect the confidentiality of the patient.
