Abstract

There is controversy regarding which dependent measures are acceptable for research on police use of deadly force. Some researchers have used fatal shooting rates to draw conclusions about deadly force and have been criticized for excluding information on shots that result in woundings or misses. This research assessed the relationship between justifiable homicide rates and deadly force rates. The results indicate that the two measures are not, in fact, producing similar patterns of variation across cities and, thus, cannot be used interchangeably to analyze factors related to the use of deadly force by police.
