Abstract

The United States is projected in both academic and popular literature as a nation with a high tolerance for violence and high incidence of violence. The study reported here measured community acceptance of crime and willingness to report acts of interpersonal violence to the police in 1986-1987 and 1991-1992. The results indicate that people have a relatively low level of acceptance of interpersonal violence and that this pattern is stable over time.
