Abstract

Criminologists who currently argue that violent crime remains exclusively masculine have been misled because they have failed to consider the female crime rate as a valid phenomenon in and of itself. This article takes such a focus and presents data on current crime trends, which indicate that there have been substantial increases in violent crime by females, especially in the rates for assault, aggravated assault, and weapons violations. These increases are more pronounced for young girls than for women; thus there is a greater trend toward convergence of rates of violent crime for juveniles than for adults. It is argued that
