Abstract

Worldwide, 20-50% of women will be victims of physical violence perpetrated by men they know and will suffer adverse health consequences. In countries suffering economic depression, young girls and children are increasingly becoming the victims of child sexual abuse or child trafficking and prostitution. In response to this situation, the 50th World Health Assembly heard a report by the World Health Organization's (WHO) Director-General that endorsed the WHO's 3-year integrated plan of action on violence prevention and health. The WHO also held a workshop in July 1997 to improve the capacity of health professionals to deal with the problem by discussing the identification, treatment, support, and counseling of women victims of violence.
