Abstract

In order to find out whether day care was associated with different social outcomes, a study was carried out with a sample of 16.5 children, aged between 6 and 11 years. Dependent variables were children's answers to questions concerning their behaviour in hypothetical aggression provoking situations and teachers' judgements of the children. Very few differences were found between day care and non-day care children. Girls with day care experience appeared to respond to the stories with more moral indignation and expressed more anger than their counterparts with no day care experience. The stability of day care and the number of hours in day care were related to the children's social competence as judged by the teachers. Once again, results in the Netherlands are not as negative as those in the United States. Some possible explanations for these findings are given.
