Abstract

Personal security and protection in the health care industry are an issue of concern to every health care worker, yet common sense protection measures are often overlooked, whether due to ignorance or the assumption that "it could not happen to me." There are some simple procedures that can be followed to reduce the risk of being victimized. The intent of this article is to underscore the fact that security procedures are more common sense measures than specialized training. Knowledge of karate, firearms handling, and use of specialized weapons are not necessary to defend yourself in your everyday life. Items that you carry with you every day can be used to defend yourself.
