Abstract

Most antipsychotics cause hypogonadism due to hyperprolactinemia. And selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, the first-line antidepressants, have been reported to accelerate bone loss. These drugs, as well as tricyclic antidepressants, also increase falls, leading to a high fracture risk. Clinical data suggest that β-adrenergic receptor antagonists prevent bone loss and fractures, but it still remains controversial. This overview summarizes recent clinical findings about effect of these modulators of psychotic and neural function on bone metabolism.
