Abstract

This paper reports a study to investigate the effect of altering bridge markings on the number of incidents where vehicles strike low bridges. The experiment investigated whether new markings produced more correct driver decisions about whether they could pass under the bridge safely. It also examined whether drivers would stop significantly earlier with the new markings when approaching a bridge which was low enough to be hit. The testing of the markings was carried out in a laboratory using a simulated driving environment, with subjects' braking procedures as the experimental measures. The results showed that subjects responded earlier to bridges with the redesigned markings.
