Abstract

The aim of this study is to provide data for the vision of drivers at night, not only for the promotion of road safety, but also for achieving an increased level of visual comfort under mesopic and dark visual conditions. The survey is based on a questionnaire combined with ergophthalmological tests. For all those who use their car to go to work, night driving is unavoidable. On the road, one can find two populations: those well adapted and those much less controlled. Two questions arise: are private drivers sufficiently aware of their possible handicaps and are the used indicators sufficiently reliable? The results signify that a certain number of factors have to be taken into account simultaneously. These will determine the amount of visual disturbance and strain. This situation can be remedied largely through the application of appropriate ergonomic and ergophthalmological measures, which are detailed.
