Abstract

A pilot of a B-24 traces the changes of intensity of his anxiety feelings before and during a twice-postponed bombing mission, with comments on the ineffectiveness of his attempts to overcome the anxiety. Factors influencing anxiety are discussed. The defenses of the target and interval since the last mission are positively related, whereas combat experience, identification with the group, and personal incentive decrease anxiety.
