Abstract

Methods suggested by the author for dealing with annoyances are: (1) preventing the stimulus and avoiding the situation, (2) the direct use of the will, (3) delaying the response, (4) classifying and thinking about the external situation, (5) thinking about the causes and nature of the feeling of annoyance, (6) the use of wit and humor, and (7) repeating the stimulus. There are marked differences between people in the matter of common annoyances; and the most effective methods will also vary in the same person at different times. There is no claim that all annoyances are injurious and should be eliminated. No attempt should be made to remove some of them, because they may be beneficial when they act as a tonic.
