Abstract

Studied toxic amnesias, caused by alcohol. The experimental distraction method (hypnoidal) of Sidis was used on four cases. Results showed that in all the cases, the amnesia was toxic, and memories of the amnesic periods existed in diffused and dissociated form in the subconscious mental life. Its revival and synthesis with the upper consciousness could be accomplished by hypnosis, or by distraction of the upper consciousness (as was done in the hypnoidal method); it could also surface in subsequent delirium or hallucinosis.
