Abstract |
Discusses various studies on juvenile suicides. Statistics of the prevalence of suicides in Germany, France, Russia and Prussia, and the causes, as studied by Proal and Eulenberg, are provided. Proal's study of causes was qualitative and was based upon the 'death letters' left by the victims. Based on the study, Eulenberg grouped the causes under 3 classes: (1) those relating to school (2) hereditary neuropathic predisposition, and (3) miscellaneous. Studies have shown that children's suicides are relatively more frequent in cities, than in the country and in small cities. Finally, the role of the school in preventing juvenile suicides has been dealt with. It has been suggested that the schools should inspire self-confidence, teach how to succeed, and train children in the habits of healthful activities.
