Abstract

Call records of the Ambulance Service in Poznan have been reviewed to disclose the type of accidents suffered by children and teenagers, causes and circumstances, and to define some preventive measures. It was found that there were 1347 injuries in 2001. Boys were more often involved (60%) than girls (40%). The number of accidents increases with age, with a peak at 17-18 years of age. Head injuries prevail, accounting for 39.4% of all cases. Injuries are due to falls (28%), traffic accidents (16%), and pedestrian accidents (14%). Most of the injuries happen at home and in its vicinity (38%).
