Abstract

The congestion in cities today is associated with transportation. A large urban population generates a formidable amount of traffic. The use of private car has increased greatly in the last thirty years, and the low use factor - 1.7 passengers per vehicle - has steadily increased congestion. This article examines the role of rapid transit in a city to help solve the congestion problem. New York City and Chicago are used as examples of cities where development of both elevated and subway lines have enabled the cities to grow to their present state.
