Abstract

One of Norway's most famous artists after the Second World War was Alf Prøysen (1914-70). He made his debut with a collection of short stories in 1945 entitled "Dørstokken heme" (The doorsill at home). Three of the short stories deal with women who develop mental illness. This article is about how Prøysen describes the mental illnesses and what might have provoked them.
